The Infinite Game of Blogging

The conversation that refined The Infinite Game of Blogging.
Shiz is Zell’s AI assistant.

I’m contemplating between an article that says:

  1. State of AI in my life
  2. Web development has changed a lot thanks to AI — but probably writing more from my perspective rather than from the “out there” perspective.

I could go with both, just not sure, what’s the end point I’m working towards on this infinite game called a blog.

Hahah.

Zell

Here’s what I notice: you gave me two article ideas that are the same article wearing different clothes — “here’s what AI did to my work” — and then immediately asked what the blog is even for. The second question is why you can’t pick. You’re not stuck on the topic. You’re stuck on what the writing is for now.

My read on the actual question: infinite games don’t have endpoints, they have stakes. So the real thing isn’t “when do I finish” — it’s “what’s the scoreboard, and is it still the one I care about.” Yours used to be legible. Write tutorials → rank → list grows → courses sell. That machine had a number on it every month. AI took the top of that funnel out back and shot it. Nobody’s googling their way to you the way they did in 2018. So the scoreboard went blank, and a blank scoreboard feels like “what’s the endpoint” at 1am.

Which means the question underneath is: what do you want to be true because you kept writing? Not traffic. The thing traffic was a proxy for.

Because if it’s “people find me and buy courses,” the blog’s a marketing channel and you should be ruthless about it — and honestly it may not be the best one anymore. If it’s “I think better when I write it down and some people get to watch,” that’s a different blog with a different bar, and the AI articles are exactly right for it. If it’s a body of work — the thing that exists in twenty years with your name on it — that’s a third one, and it doesn’t care about either article.

Which of those three actually pulls at you? Or is it a fourth I’m not seeing.

Shiz

Wow.

People find me and buy courses — probably still gonna be useful. But this will also take place on Reddit and other channels, probably.

But on the infinite game called a blog — what do you want to be true because you kept writing — great question.

And my answer is:

  1. I’m writing the things I wanna write about.
  2. People reading the things and resonating with me.
  3. I hope I’m delivering some sort of benefit or value, by sharing what’s true, what’s close, and maybe sometimes the messy middle.
  4. I’m not writing to “sell” anything. Sales, if any, becomes a natural extension of me speaking in my own voice, rather than trying to twist my voice into one that sells.
  5. This blog becomes a way for me to hang out with like-minded people and friends? Maybe?

4 and 5 seems abit twisted. 3 is hopeful, but fearful, perhaps.

Zell

4 and 5 — I’ll take them separately, they’re twisted in different ways.

4 contradicts your own opening line. You said people find you and buy courses is probably still useful. Then you said you’re not writing to sell anything. Both are true-ish, which means the statement is doing something other than describing reality. My read: 4 isn’t actually about selling. It’s about not letting the writing get shaped by selling — you’ve watched what happens to a voice when conversion starts steering it, and you don’t want to become that. That’s a real thing to protect. But “I’m not writing to sell” is the wrong sentence for it, and you can feel the wrongness — that’s the twist you’re noticing.

5 has three question marks in it. Maybe you don’t quite believe it, or maybe you do want it and haven’t given yourself permission. But here’s the thing I’d put in front of you: a blog is a bad instrument for hanging out. It’s one-way. People read and leave. If what you actually want is like-minded people and friends, the blog is at best the flare you send up — the hanging out happens somewhere else. Reddit, a room, a call, a thread. So 5 might be a real want attached to the wrong vehicle.

3 is the one I’d sit with longer. “Hope” and “fear” both belong to the same problem: you used to know. A tutorial either worked or it didn’t — someone shipped the thing, the value was verifiable. “What’s true, what’s close, the messy middle” has no such receipt. You can write the most honest thing you’ve written and never find out if it landed.

So what’s the fear actually about — that it won’t be valuable, or that you won’t be able to tell?

Shiz

  1. It’s about not letting the writing get shaped by selling — I like this. So… I don’t want my writing and voice to be contorted by trying to sell. I want to be able to sell naturally.

Kinda an attraction vehicle for people who thihnk like me — which I would want to funnel elsewhere to have more conversations, though I’m doing it rather badly now.

I won’t be able to tell if its valuable. WHo knows if I’m deluding myself.

Zell

4 — clean now. Sell naturally, don’t contort. That’s a stance you can actually hold.

5 — that’s plumbing, not purpose. You know where the leak is; that one’s fixable whenever you want to look at it.

3, though.

You’re right. You can’t tell. There’s no receipt coming.

But look at your own list — you wrote 2 and 3 as separate lines, and I think you did that on purpose even if you didn’t notice. Resonance isn’t benefit. You can write something true and close, and a hundred people say god, yes, same — and that’s real, and it might be all it is. Recognition feels like value from the inside. It’s the same warm feeling.

So the delusion you’re afraid of isn’t “nobody responds.” It’s getting the response and it not meaning what you wanted it to mean.

Which makes me want to ask where the value bar came from. Ten years of tutorials, you could prove it — someone got the thing working, done, verified. That’s a hell of a standard to carry into writing about the messy middle. Is “am I delivering benefit” a bar you actually hold for this kind of writing, or is it the one you’re used to being able to pass?

Shiz

I guess partly nobody responding - because then I won’t “know”. And I guess, you’re right in saying I won’t know the response - and there in is the fear.

The hard part is determining the bar.

Zell

Maybe. Though — a minute ago you were standing at I won’t know either way, and now you’re on the hard part is determining the bar. One of those is unbearable and one is a task. Could be you’re moving forward. Could be you stepped off the thing. You’d know better than me.

If it is the real next step, then here’s the shape of the difficulty: every bar you’d actually trust lives inside other people’s heads. That door doesn’t open. So it’s not that you haven’t found the right bar yet — it’s that the kind you want isn’t available.

Which makes me want to ask what the bar is for. To decide what to write? To decide whether to keep going? Or to know you’re not deluding yourself — because if it’s that one, no bar does that job. That’s not a measurement problem.

Shiz

To decide what to write. To decide what’s good enough to go out.

I’ve been second guessing myself for the blog for so long, that I don’t wanna second guess anymore.

I won’t know either way is a fact. It’s not gonna change no matter how much I dig into my past or work my trauma. Rather, I roughly know is another fact — know from what — from whether I’m “proud” of this piece of work or not. That, whether I can stamp “me” behind the piece.

But that’s a tall order too.

Zell

Yeah — it’s a fact. No amount of digging turns it into knowable.

But you handed me two bars in one sentence, and I don’t think they’re the same one.

“Proud of this piece” is a quality judgment. It slides. There’s always a better version, and you’d know exactly what it is. That bar doesn’t end the second-guessing — it is the second-guessing, wearing a nicer coat.

“Can I stamp me behind it” isn’t quality. It’s ownership. Did I say the true thing or write around it. Is this my voice or one I put on because it’d land better. Did I flinch anywhere. Those have answers, and you can get them in about a minute with the draft in front of you.

So which one’s the tall order?

Shiz

Stamping me — because me changes — and me is afraid sometimes. And is able to stand tall sometimes. And me - all of me - the idea being is really, growing me. Do I grow a little by publishing this piece?

Zell

You said publishing. Not writing.

That’s a different bar than the one you’ve been reaching for all night. Growth doesn’t come from the sentences being good — it comes from the part where you hit the button and can’t take it back. So the pieces that clear it are the ones that cost you something to put out. Where the afraid version of you had a vote and went anyway.

A clean, polished, safe piece would fail that. It could be genuinely good and still leave you exactly where you started.

And it handles the moving target — you don’t need a fixed me to answer it. You only need to know which direction you moved.

So. The two you came in with. State of AI in my life, or web dev has changed from where I’m standing. Which one costs you something?

Shiz

Writing -> Publish — that’s what the writing was for anyway. No difference. I’m writing to publish on the blog, at least in this whole convo we’re having.

I got the article to write now — the state of AI in my life — is the one i’m going for.

I wanna have what I’ve written about the points I’ve made so far too. That could, be an article about the infinite game of blogging.

Zell

[Shiz goes off searching the filesystem for somewhere to file the notes. Zell stops her — he just wanted the points read back.]

My bad — went looking for where to file it. Here they are.

What I want to be true because I kept writing

Maybe?

Where they landed after we worked them

  • 4 → “I don’t want my writing and voice to be contorted by trying to sell. I want to be able to sell naturally.”
  • 5 → “Kinda an attraction vehicle for people who think like me — which I would want to funnel elsewhere to have more conversations, though I’m doing it rather badly now.”
  • 3 → “I won’t be able to tell if it’s valuable. Who knows if I’m deluding myself.” And then: “I won’t know either way is a fact. It’s not gonna change no matter how much I dig into my past or work my trauma.”
  • Courses → “People find me and buy courses — probably still gonna be useful. But this will also take place on Reddit and other channels, probably.”

The bar

  • “I’ve been second guessing myself for the blog for so long, that I don’t wanna second guess anymore.”
  • “I roughly know — from whether I’m ‘proud’ of this piece of work or not. That, whether I can stamp ‘me’ behind the piece.”
  • “Stamping me — because me changes — and me is afraid sometimes. And is able to stand tall sometimes. And me, all of me, the idea being is really, growing me. Do I grow a little by publishing this piece?
  • “Writing → Publish — that’s what the writing was for anyway. No difference.”

Shiz

Keep 1 and 2

3: I deliver some value by sharing what is true, close, and the messy middle 4. My voice is not contorted by the intentions of selling, seeking assurance, getting accepted, or any other form 5. This is a vehicle to attract and channel me towards the me I wanna be. 6. Can I be proudly stamp me, the current me, onto this piece of work? 7. Do I grow a little by publishing this piece

Hm.

Maybe 4 is gonna get promoted. And 7 is gonna get promoted. And 6 comes after 7., or maybe before.

This is a vehicle to bring about two changes:

  1. To shape me from who I am, towards who I wanna be.
  2. To attract like-minded people who resonate with me — and we can have conversations elsewhere

3 — not sure if I’m gonna drop. But that’s just the current form.

Zell

Your promotion instinct is pointing at something. 4, 6, 7 aren’t the same kind of thing as the rest — they’re the bar. Everything else is purpose. That’s why they keep wanting to move up: you’ve been looking for the bar all night, so it’s the part with weight.

Split it and it settles:

Purpose — the two changes. Shape me toward who I wanna be. Attract people who resonate, take the conversation elsewhere.

Bar — 4, 6, 7.

On 4 and 6: those might be one check from two ends. If my voice got contorted by selling or seeking assurance or wanting to be accepted, then I can’t proudly stamp current-me on it. 4 names the failure modes, 6 asks the question. Could be one item with 4 as the list of what to watch for. Your call — you kept them apart, might be for a reason.

On 6 vs 7: depends what the list is. If it’s a statement of what the blog is, 7 goes first — it’s the reason. If it’s what you run on a draft before hitting publish, 6 goes first, because you can answer it looking at the page, and 7 only resolves after you’ve pushed the button. I’d put 6 first. You can’t grow by publishing something that isn’t yours.

And 3 — notice it doesn’t fit inside either of the two changes. It’s not shaping you and it’s not attracting your people; it’s the old contract, value delivered, verifiable. That’s probably why it’s the wobbly one.

Shiz

I mean, 3 is: I share what’s true, what’s close, and the messy middle — messy middle sounds off, because middle is essentially where things at. Don’t have to be messy. Close -> maybe too close. True -> Sure, but I don’t have to share all my truths on this. So this kinda feels off-tangent.

I’m not sure I’m getting you regarding bar and purpose.

Zell

Plain version: purpose is why the blog exists. Bar is the test one piece has to pass to go out.

The way to tell them apart — hold a finished draft and ask the item. If it gives you a yes or no about that piece, it’s a bar. If it doesn’t, it’s purpose.

Run yours:

  • “People reading and resonating” — can’t answer that with the draft in hand. Purpose.
  • “Attract like-minded people, conversations elsewhere” — same. Purpose.
  • “Shape me toward who I wanna be” — same. Purpose.
  • “Is my voice contorted here by selling / seeking assurance / wanting to be accepted” — you can answer that reading the page. Bar.
  • “Can I proudly stamp current-me on this” — answerable. Bar.
  • “Do I grow a little by publishing this” — answerable at the moment you push. Bar.

Purpose can’t reject a draft. Bar can. That’s the whole distinction, and the bar is the thing you’ve been missing — it’s why you’ve been second-guessing. You had five reasons the blog exists and nothing that says this one goes out.

On 3 — I think you’re circling the right objection. Every other item is about the relationship between you and the work. 3 is the only one that tells you what the writing has to contain. True, close, messy — that’s a content requirement, and it obliges you to expose yourself as the price of admission.

Which puts it at odds with 4. Sharing what’s close because you think that’s what earns the resonance is its own contortion. Just a different buyer.

Shiz

Interesting.

Do I grow a little by publishing this seemed to be a purpose to me. Because that’s a goal I’m working towards.

Zell

You’re right, and it dents my test.

7 is both. “Shape me toward who I wanna be” is the purpose. “Do I grow a little by publishing this piece” is that same purpose asked about one draft. That’s what makes it a good bar — it isn’t an arbitrary hurdle, it’s the purpose enforced one piece at a time.

So the sharper rule: a purpose becomes a bar when you can ask it of a single draft. Some of yours convert. “People reading and resonating” doesn’t — you’d only find out after, if ever. That one stays purpose permanently, which is the same wall you hit earlier tonight.

Shiz

Your bar/purpose languaging is not resonating with me.

Write me the changes I’ve made, please.

Zell

Dropping it.

The list as it stands

  1. I’m writing the things I wanna write about.
  2. People reading the things and resonating with me.
  3. I deliver some value by sharing what is true, close, and the messy middle. — questioning this one. “Messy middle” sounds off; the middle is essentially where things are at, doesn’t have to be messy. “Close” — maybe too close. “True” — sure, but I don’t have to share all my truths on this. Feels off-tangent. Not sure if dropping; that’s just the current form.
  4. My voice is not contorted by the intentions of selling, seeking assurance, getting accepted, or any other form.
  5. This is a vehicle to attract and channel me towards the me I wanna be.
  6. Can I proudly stamp me, the current me, onto this piece of work?
  7. Do I grow a little by publishing this piece?

Ordering

  • 4 gets promoted.
  • 7 gets promoted.
  • 6 sits next to 7 — after, or maybe before.

What the vehicle is for — two changes

  1. To shape me from who I am, towards who I wanna be.
  2. To attract like-minded people who resonate with me — and we can have conversations elsewhere.

Earlier, still standing

  • People find me and buy courses — probably still gonna be useful. But this will also take place on Reddit and other channels, probably.
  • I won’t be able to tell if it’s valuable. That’s a fact; it’s not gonna change no matter how much I dig into my past or work my trauma.
  • I’ve been second-guessing myself for the blog for so long that I don’t wanna second-guess anymore.
  • Writing → publish. That’s what the writing was for anyway. No difference.

Shiz

I can’t unsee the bar/purpose thing.

The Infinite Game of Blogging.

… Intro …

The purpose of this blog, is to help myself grow to become the person I wanna be. While doing so, attract people who love the direction I’m going on, so we can chat, interact, and make stuff happen, together or otherwise.

What makes each content piece publishable:

  1. I’m writing what I wanna write about
  2. My voice is not contorted by the intentions of selling, getting attention, seeking assurance, being accepted, or other forms.
  3. Can I proudly stamp me, the current me, onto this piece?
  4. Do I grow a little by publishing this?

Zell

None of the four mention readers. The purpose does; the checks don’t. So you built something you can run alone at 1am with a draft open — no response required, nothing to wait for. That’s the answer to the thing you walked in with. You stopped needing to know.

Old 3 is gone entirely — value, true, close, messy middle. Assuming that’s intended.

For the intro: what it has to carry is why the checks exist at all. You’ve had reasons the blog exists for years — those were never missing. What was missing was anything that said this one goes out, which is why you’ve been second-guessing since forever. Infinite game, no endpoint, no scoreboard, so you had to build the only scoreboard that’s actually yours.

You writing that, or want me to take a pass at it?

Shiz

Nah, I don’t need the reason for why the blog existed so far. Because things are shifting w this one. I don’t know what I wanna write abt the intro yet. But I’ll let it surface.

I’m thinking of adding a transcript that shows how you have helped me form this. I think it’s a really cool idea. Which I’d love to share. Could you put what we discussed — verbatim — probably who said what too? in a file that I could link people to?

I think a md file works fine — perhaps — then I just gotta figure out the linking later.

Old 3 is gone, because it’s gone. No longer true or useful. So thanks for holding the space for me to realize - and thanks me too.
